Forgot Your Medication While Traveling in Japan?

If you forgot your regular medication in your home country, lost your medication, or did not bring enough for your trip, our clinic may be able to help.

For example:

  • You forgot your blood pressure medication before flying to Japan.
  • You ran out of diabetes medication during your vacation.
  • You need to continue using your asthma inhaler while staying in Tokyo.
  • You forgot your regular medication for insomnia or depression.
  • You need allergy medication that you normally take in your home country.
  • You are staying in Japan longer than expected and need additional medication.

You may not need to return to your home country to obtain a new prescription.

Our doctor can review your medical history, current condition, and previous treatment to determine whether an appropriate medication can be prescribed in Japan.

If your usual medication is unavailable in Japan, the doctor may consider a suitable alternative.

However, we cannot guarantee that medication will be prescribed or that you will receive exactly the same medication you used in your home country.

All prescriptions require a medical consultation and must comply with Japanese medical regulations.

  • Stable, mild to moderate depression
  • Insomnia and other sleep difficulties
  • Stable anxiety-related symptoms

If you are already taking antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, or sleeping pills, our doctor can review your existing prescription and assess whether continued treatment is appropriate.

Important:

Some sleeping pills, psychiatric medications, and controlled substances are subject to special prescribing restrictions in Japan.

Even if you have an existing prescription from your home country, we cannot guarantee that the same medication, dosage, or quantity can be prescribed.

We do not provide treatment or prescriptions for severe psychiatric disorders or conditions requiring specialist psychiatric management.

We also offer follow-up consultations after health check-ups and nutrition counseling.

Medical Conditions We Cannot Manage

Our clinic primarily provides general internal medicine and treatment for stable chronic medical conditions.

We are unable to provide ongoing treatment or prescriptions for certain complex or unstable conditions that require specialist medical management.

These include:

  • Type 1 diabetes, particularly patients requiring specialist insulin management
  • Autoimmune diseases requiring specialist treatment, including conditions requiring immunosuppressive therapy
  • Severe psychiatric disorders or conditions requiring specialist psychiatric treatment
  • Other complex or unstable medical conditions requiring highly specialized care

For these conditions, we recommend visiting an appropriate specialist or hospital.

Even if you have an existing prescription from your home country, we may not be able to continue prescribing medication for these conditions.

Can I Get the Same Medication I Take in My Home Country?

In some cases, continued treatment with the same medication may be possible after a medical consultation.

However, medication names, formulations, availability, and prescribing regulations may differ between Japan and other countries.

Our doctor will review:

  • Your current medication name
  • Active ingredients and dosage
  • Your medical condition and treatment history
  • Your current symptoms
  • Potential side effects and drug interactions
  • Medication availability and prescribing regulations in Japan

If the same medication is available in Japan and medically appropriate, the doctor may prescribe it.

If it is unavailable, a suitable alternative may be considered.

Sleeping Pills and Psychiatric Medications

We cannot guarantee that the same sleeping pills, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, or other psychiatric medications prescribed in your home country will be available or prescribed at our clinic.

Some medications may not be approved in Japan or may be subject to additional prescribing restrictions.

If your condition requires specialist psychiatric treatment, we recommend consulting a psychiatrist.

A medical consultation is always required before any prescription can be issued.

What Should I Bring for a Prescription Refill?

To help our doctor understand your existing treatment, please bring as much of the following information as possible:

  • Your medication or a photograph of its packaging
  • Medication name, active ingredient, and dosage
  • A previous prescription from your doctor
  • Medical records or a doctor’s letter
  • Recent blood test results, if available
  • Your medication notebook (okusuri techo), if you have one

A referral letter is not necessarily required.

Even if you do not have complete medical records, please provide as much information as possible about your current medications and medical history.

Our doctor will determine whether additional examinations or tests are necessary.

Can I Continue Treatment Started at Another Clinic?

Depending on your condition, continued treatment may be possible.

If you previously received medical care at a clinic or hospital in Japan or another country, our doctors may be able to continue treatment for common chronic diseases.

Examples include:

  • Regular follow-up and prescriptions for hypertension
  • Medication management for type 2 diabetes
  • Continued treatment for dyslipidemia
  • Prescription consultations for asthma inhalers
  • Follow-up care for chronic kidney disease

Please bring your previous prescriptions, medical records, or test results whenever possible.

Blood Tests and Follow-Up

Depending on your medical condition and medication, blood tests may be recommended to monitor treatment effectiveness and safety.

Blood test results generally take several days.

Please note that we do not provide a service to send test results by email.

Our doctor will explain how and when you can receive your results.
