Asthma, also known as bronchial asthma, is a condition characterized by recurring episodes (attacks) of narrowed airways in the respiratory system, causing difficulty in breathing. It is caused by chronic inflammation of the airways, which leads to swelling of the airway walls, increased mucus production, and constriction of the surrounding muscles, resulting in asthma symptoms.
While asthma is often associated with children, it can also develop in adults, and there are cases where it first occurs in adulthood. More than 90% of asthma cases in children are related to allergies, whereas in adults, allergies account for about 60% of cases, with the remaining cases classified as non-allergic or non-atopic asthma. It is worth noting that while asthma in adults is considered to be a chronic condition that may not be completely cured, proper and continuous treatment can enable individuals to lead a life similar to those without asthma.

If you experience the symptoms mentioned above, it is advisable to consider visiting an internal medicine or allergy specialist, or consult your primary care physician. As long as the inflammation persists, asthma attacks can occur at any time. Prolonged inflammation can lead to a condition called “remodeling,” where the airways become rigid and narrow, making it difficult to return to their normal state. This can contribute to worsening symptoms and make treatment less effective, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.
For individuals already undergoing treatment, it is also recommended to promptly seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve with the use of prescribed medications during an attack or if severe asthma symptoms persist.
The cornerstone of asthma treatment is pharmacotherapy, which involves the use of medications. In addition to medication, it is important to make improvements in lifestyle and environmental factors, as mentioned below.
Medications used in the treatment of asthma can be divided into two types: long-term control medications and quick-relief medications.
Long-term control medications are used to prevent asthma attacks by reducing airway inflammation. Typically, inhaled corticosteroids to reduce airway inflammation and bronchodilators to widen the airways are commonly used.
Inhaled corticosteroids have a direct effect on the airways and are effective even in small doses, with fewer side effects compared to long-term oral medications or intravenous treatments. It is important to note that long-term control medications take time to show their full effects. While symptoms may improve quickly upon starting the medication, inflammation may still be present, so it is crucial not to discontinue the medication without medical guidance.
Quick-relief medications are used during asthma attacks to quickly widen the airways. They provide immediate relief; however, they are not intended as fundamental treatments to improve underlying airway inflammation. Relying solely on quick-relief medications may lead to worsening inflammation and worsening asthma, so caution is necessary.
There are factors in one’s lifestyle and environment that can contribute to the exacerbation of asthma. When diagnosed with asthma, it is important to be mindful of the following points:
The following factors can contribute to the worsening of asthma:
To avoid these triggers, make an effort to maintain a clean living environment, engage in stress-reducing activities, and take necessary precautions. By avoiding these factors that can exacerbate asthma, you can help manage your condition effectively.
Having a regular lifestyle and ensuring an adequate amount of sleep are important. It is also recommended to engage in moderate exercise, as it is believed to reduce the likelihood of asthma attacks by improving physical fitness. Furthermore, it is known that obesity can worsen asthma, so improving lifestyle habits is crucial. However, intense exercise can sometimes exacerbate asthma, so it’s important to consult with a physician and engage in appropriate activities.
